Westfalia supplies prime-quality fresh mangoes to various retailers in different geographies. Cultivars available according to season include Keitt, Kent, Heidi, Sensation and Tommy Atkins, which can be supplied ripe and ready to eat by Westfalia, thanks to its ripening expertise.
Sourcing mangoes from reputable growers across the globe enables Westfalia to extend the supply window as far as possible and helps ensure customer expectations are met.
New Mango Cultivars released by Westfalia Fruit
Westfalia Fruit recently released three new and exciting club mango varieties to the South African mango-grower community. These cultivars – namely
HoneyGold™ – are all protected by plant breeders’ rights and managed under a club system.
Through its research division,
Westfalia Technological Services (WTS), Westfalia is continuously selecting and evaluating both avocado and mango fruiting cultivars to find cultivars that meet specific criteria. These include superior eating quality, fruit-size distribution, colour development (for mangoes) and disease resistance, as well as maturation occurring either earlier or later than that of current commercial cultivars, which would enable extension of the season for both avocados and mangoes.
An additional objective of WTS is to find novel cultivars that assist in differentiating Westfalia from other subtropical fruit growers and marketers. When a variety is identified that meets the necessary requirements, the plant material is legally protected. Only once protection is in place does WTS allow the controlled commercialisation of a cultivar by licensing growers in strategic areas to cultivate the material.
A grower grouping is therefore a collection of growers who are contracted to grow a certain number of trees of a cultivar. Technical support is provided to the grower by WTS, which in turn has the right to appoint marketers for the fruit to ensure optimal returns to the grower.
Growers and Regulations
Westfalia chooses to work with strategically-placed individuals who understand the ethos of the greater company, and are willing to build a long-lasting relationship.
Prospective growers should note that certain royalties apply when trees are purchased. Depending on the cultivar there is a production royalty payable as well as an annual royalty per tree.
From a sales perspective, all fruit produced by these trees should be marketed through Westfalia’s well-established and optimised marketing channels.
