We research and develop

We research and develop Westfalia Technological Services (WTS) is the research division of Westfalia Fruit and the largest privately-funded subtropical fruit research organisation in the world. The in-house dedicated team of scientists and technicians at WTS focusses on varietal development, innovation and environmental matters.

We research and developWTS was founded in the 1980s and still operates on founder Dr Merensky’s principle of ‘research, experimentation and demonstration through the correlation of scientific knowledge’. Over the years, WTS has evolved and is now seen as a world leader in applied research dealing with subtropical crops, with specific focus on avocados.

WTS supports and furthers the objectives of the greater Westfalia Group, addressing challenges and enhancing technologies in order to strengthen all links in the value chain, from propagation to consumer service.

WTS is involved in the testing and commercialisation of avocado and mango plant material in more than 20 countries, in collaboration with various organisations and educational institutions.

Growers Club

In addition to producing fruit in its own avocado orchards around the world, Westfalia Fruit sources avocados and other fruit from select growers through a vertically-integrated supply chain. The Group also licenses growers to produce avocado and mango cultivars protected by patents and Plant Breeders’ Rights, as part of what we call Growers Clubs or Club Cultivar Growers...read more

Rootstock development

At Westfalia Fruit, research to develop disease-tolerant clonal rootstocks has been ongoing for more than 25 years. The objective is to produce uniform trees with superior tree health and yields. Success in this regard has been achieved by the development of the avocado rootstocks Latas® (Merensky 1) and Dusa® (Merensky 2). These rootstocks have proven to show high Phytophthora cinnamomi (P.c.) root rot- and salinity tolerance. Dusa® has also attracted international attention as ‘Hass’ yields have proven to be substantially increased when using this clonal rootstock... read more
