Shoppers place an avocado on the unit and receive an indication of whether it is ready to eat now or needs more time to ripen, helping them choose fruit that matches when they plan to use it. This is particularly important in a market where avocados are still relatively unknown to consumers, and this fun technology assists in educating them about eating avocados at the perfect ripeness stage.
By taking some of the uncertainty out of the purchase, Westfalia Fruit aims to increase confidence at the shelf and improve the eating experience at home.
The Ripe-O-Meter is being introduced alongside Westfalia Fruit’s existing ripening programmes, packaging and in-store education. Together, these capabilities allow the company to support retailers not only with supply, but with the full consumer journey from shelf to eating experience.

There is also a practical benefit for fruit quality. Shoppers commonly test avocado ripeness by squeezing the fruit, which can lead to bruising and unnecessary damage. Providing a clearer indication of ripeness can reduce handling, helping retailers protect product quality and potentially reduce waste across the store and at home.
“Indian consumers are increasingly discovering avocados, but knowing when the fruit is ready to eat remains an important barrier,” says Ajay TG, Market Unit Director India at Westfalia Fruit. “By making ripeness easier to understand at the point of purchase, we can give shoppers more confidence, improve the eating experience and help our retail partners build repeat demand for the category.”
Hans Boyum, Customer Director Developing Markets at Westfalia Fruit, adds: “Growing an avocado market takes more than putting fruit on the shelf. Reliable supply and quality are essential, but long-term growth comes from understanding what stops consumers coming back and solving those barriers. Guiding consumers on choosing the right ripened avocados is a simple intervention, but it can make a meaningful difference to how people experience the category.”
India is one of the most promising growth markets for avocados globally. Westfalia Fruit supplies the market largely from African origins and is investing across supply, ripening, distribution and category development to help make avocados more accessible and easier to enjoy through retail, foodservice and e-commerce channels.
