Growing GEM®
GEM® is a protected avocado cultivar that can only be grown and traded under licence. Westfalia’s research division, Westfalia Technological Services (WTS) holds the world-wide Master Licence for the production of GEM®, as well as the exclusive right to trade GEM® in Africa, the EU and many other regions of the world. GEM® is licensed exclusively to WTS by the University of California Riverside, USA.
GEM® tends to flower prolifically and is a precocious and consistent bearer. It is believed that due to slower oil accumulation, GEM® fruit can hang much longer on the tree without compromising fruit quality. Also, GEM® takes 4-6 weeks longer to reach the traditional maximum legal moisture content for the export of Hass fruit. This stretches the supply of top-quality locally grown avocados closer to year-round.
GEM®
- Late maturing: 4 weeks later than Hass
- Consistent bearer: Yield better than Hass
- Good fruit size: Slightly larger than Hass
- High-yielding, compact trees: High crop loads from an easily-managed tree
- Excellent post-harvest fruit quality: On par with Hass
- Processing: Can be processed into guacamole
Join the GEM® Grower Association
After several years of evaluating the cultivar in its own orchards, WTS has established a closed GEM® Grower Association. Contact Theo Bekker (WTS Operational Manager, Southern Africa, theob@westfaliafruit.co.za) with any questions regarding Grower Associations.
